THE MEXICO CITY EARTHQUAKE
On the 19th September 1985 (7:19 local time) a large earthquake measuring up to 8.1 on the Richter scale occurred next to Mexico City.
The actual earthquake occurred over 300 km away from Mexico City but Mexico City was most affected (some people living near the actual earthquake said "We didn't even now there was an earthquake until we heard about the one in Mexico City.)
Three main hospitals collapsed (burying many injured people alive), hotels were knocked over and building fell over in seconds. Over 800 buildings were destroyed.
An after shock hit the next day, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale.
About 10,000 people died and over 50,000 were injured.
250,000 people were left homeless.
The Mexican government installed a earthquakes alarm,
remembering the horrible earthquake that hit Mexico City.
Fortunately, no large earthquakes have hit Mexico for a while, and I hope that it stays that way.
You have given us lots of good information there, Mitchell. Good work!
